Okay you guys, I have a confession to make: I’m totally and completely addicted to coffee. Honestly, I didn’t even realize how much I needed it until it was taken away! Coffee withdrawals are serious business—the headaches, irritability, and inability to concentrate. But, I want to give it up, even though I know it’s not going to be easy. I’ve been thinking about it during my morning meditations ever since I realized how dependent I am, and I think I’ve come up with a solution. After reading about the benefits of green tea, I’m ready to take the plunge with my new herbal tea: Wake Me Up Tea Blend. I’m so excited to share it with you!

Addiction is more than a physical dependence on something; it becomes a habit that can take over our lives. It’s a form of ritual, but not the healthy, beneficial kind. It’s true that green tea does contain caffeine (and giving up caffeine is the major reason I want to let go of coffee). But, it also contains l-theanine, an amino acid with a relaxing effect that soothes those after-coffee jitters. When I dug into the health benefits of green tea, I was amazed to find there is so much going on with this ancient tea!

The Benefits of Green Tea

Before we get into the tea blend itself, let’s take a moment to chat about the benefits of green tea. While researchers are still studying the many health benefits of green tea, we do know that people have been consuming green tea around the world for thousands of years. In traditional Chinese medicine, green tea was used to relieve headaches, help digestion, and improve mood and memory. In ancient times, they even used it to clean their gums and teeth after meals.

Today, researchers believe that the antioxidants in green tea may help prevent all kinds of ailments, including reversing type 2 diabetes and preventing cancer. More studies are needed, but the connection between green tea and health is already visible. Cancer rates are low in countries where green tea consumption is high, and there is a definite link between green tea and low obesity rates, a condition that causes type 2 diabetes.

Green tea may also help you lose weight. The caffeine in the tea leaves act as a stimulant, which can aid in fat burning. It’s also loaded with antioxidants known as catechins. These antioxidants may be able to temporarily boost the metabolism. Its possible they can even increase your base metabolic rate long term, too. Green tea can also improve your mood and give you the energy you need to get out of the house and get to a workout class. (Don’t want to hit a class? Check out our private yoga options.)
